Avoriaz is properly back in winter mode this week. The resort itself is well covered in snow and the surrounding slopes look settled and wintry, with cold temperatures helping everything stay in place. There has been a steady flow of skiers arriving over the last few days and the general feeling on the mountain is that conditions are building nicely as we head towards the Christmas period.
Current snow depths in Avoriaz are sitting at around 120 cm at altitude, with roughly 55 cm reported at resort level. Recent snowfall earlier in December helped lay down a solid base and although the last few days have been drier, cold overnight temperatures have kept the snow in good shape. Forecasts for the next few days suggest mainly settled weather with occasional light snow showers possible, particularly on higher slopes. Daytime temperatures at resort level are hovering close to freezing, while higher up they remain comfortably below zero. Freezing levels are generally staying below 1500 metres, which is ideal for preserving snow quality across most of the ski area. Winds have been light to moderate and have not caused major issues on the lifts or exposed ridges.
Looking ahead, conditions are expected to remain fairly stable through the rest of the week. Any fresh snowfall is likely to be light but enough to keep pistes feeling fresh, especially with continued cold nights. Avoriaz is fully open and operating well, and the wider Portes du Soleil area is gradually opening more links as conditions allow. Festive events are starting to appear on the calendar as the resort gears up for Christmas, including seasonal activities, family events and evening entertainment in the village. With the snow base already in place, the outlook is positive for the busy holiday period ahead.
Avoriaz is offering reliable early season skiing with good snow cover both at altitude and around the resort. Pistes are skiing well, particularly in the mornings, and conditions should remain consistent over the next few days. If you are visiting this week, expect solid snow, cold temperatures and a resort that feels ready for the festive rush.
