Avoriaz is looking properly wintry again this week. The car free streets are lined with snowbanks and the surrounding peaks are holding a solid, consistent cover. Half term has brought a lively atmosphere to resort, but out on the slopes there is still plenty of space, especially first thing in the morning. The season overall is shaping up well at altitude, and with a sizeable snowfall forecast in the coming days there is a sense that conditions are about to step up another level.
Snow and Weather Summary
Snow depths in Avoriaz are currently around 180 cm at resort level at 1800 metres, with between 200 and 240 cm across the higher sectors above 2200 metres. The past week has delivered around 10 to 20 cm of fresh snow, mostly falling above 1700 metres, which has refreshed the surface and improved grip on steeper pistes. Lower links towards Morzine have been thinner and more variable, but on the Avoriaz plateau itself coverage remains very good.
Daytime temperatures at 1800 metres have been hovering between minus 3 and plus 2 degrees, with overnight lows dropping to around minus 6 degrees. At 2400 metres temperatures have remained colder, typically between minus 10 and minus 4 degrees. The freezing level has fluctuated between 1500 and 1900 metres during milder spells, lowering again overnight. Winds have been light to moderate, stronger at times on exposed ridgelines but without major disruption to lift operations.
Forecast models are pointing towards a more significant snow system arriving from late Friday into the weekend. Current projections suggest 30 to 60 cm of new snow above 2000 metres, with 20 to 40 cm likely around resort level if colder air arrives as expected. This anticipated snow dump should dramatically refresh pistes, improve off piste potential where base depths are already strong, and reinforce cover on lower return runs.
