Winter is settling in well across Avoriaz this week. The resort has been sitting in a colder weather pattern, the high plateau has held its snow nicely, and conditions across the upper mountain have started to feel properly wintry. It has been a calm and bright few days, but more snow is on the horizon, and the town has that familiar early season buzz with the main opening weekend just ahead.
Recent snowfall across the Portes du Soleil has helped keep the pistes in good shape for this stage of December. Avoriaz is currently reporting strong snow cover at altitude, with healthy depths on the upper runs and reliable coverage through the main beginner and intermediate areas. Overnight temperatures have stayed well below freezing on the mountain which has helped preserve the natural snow and allowed the piste teams to work with good conditions.
Forecasts for the coming days show the chance of a light top up, particularly from Friday into Saturday, along with another spell of colder air. Mid mountain could see several centimetres of fresh snow if the system tracks across the Haute Savoie as expected. Freezing levels are expected to sit low enough to protect the existing base, so the snowpack should continue to improve rather than deteriorate.
Lower down towards Morzine and Les Gets, snow cover remains more variable, as usual for this time of year, but Avoriaz itself remains firmly in winter territory.
If the forecast snowfall arrives, pistes should feel refreshed heading into the weekend. The cold nights will help the snow settle well and should make early morning skiing the best of the day. More terrain is expected to open gradually as the snow consolidates, giving visitors a wider choice of runs.
Avoriaz begins its full seasonal programme from this weekend, with village activities, festive decorations going up and regular events restarting across the plateau. The first week of Christmas markets and family entertainment begins shortly after, and the resort will shift fully into holiday mode by mid December. Local businesses are reopening steadily and mountain restaurants are preparing for their first busy period of the season.
Avoriaz continues to outperform many lower altitude resorts at this stage of the season. The snowpack on the upper mountain is solid, the weather is trending in the right direction, and early season conditions look set to improve further with the next round of snowfall. Anyone heading up this weekend should expect good skiing on the higher pistes and a steadily expanding ski area as more terrain opens.
