Avoriaz Apres Ski Report: 16th January 2013

A round up of the popular resort bar scene

When it comes to the apres scene, it’s not all about Morzine. Les Gets has a much better apres scene than in previous winters, with a load of cool bars booking great bands and planning fun events for both holidaymakers and season workers. Once again, in the name of research, your selfless apres blogger went to investigate…

Big Foots Bar
Right opposite the Mont Chery telecabine in the heart of the resort, Big Foot’s Bar is a new addition to the Les Gets après scene this winter. There’s a new large, heated terrace outside which hosts DJs on Wednesday afternoons from 4pm. Their Rocky Horror Show fancy dress night last week went down a storm too! Keep an eye on Big Foots Bar on Facebook for their most up to date events - and the best part about this bar? There’s a curry house called Bombay Ski Club right next door…

Bar Bush
One of the longest established apres watering holes in Les Gets, Bar Bush can be found right in the centre of the resort, just next to the main village square. It’s not huge but there’s always a great atmosphere, especially when they book bands like CAB Collective (see my last resort!). Their ‘Winter Quiz Series’ starts at 9.30pm each and every Friday and there are regular theme nights, such as last night’s ‘S’ themed fancy dress party. Keep an eye on the Bar Bush Facebook page for more apres event details.

Chalet Le Boomerang
I’m told that years ago, Chalet Le Boomerang was THE apres venue in Les Gets. The bar was then sold by owner JM Pelluchon and things went down hill considerably. But with JM back at the helm, Chalet Le Boomerang is now going from strength to strength and can be found on the Route de Grande Alps, the main road that runs through Les Gets in the direction of Morzine. You’ll find acts such as Clare Burnage and the Pistie Boys at Chalet Le Boomerang, but the best way to know what’s going on is by following them on Facebook. There’s also a cracking tapas and wine bar at Chalet Le Boomerang too!

Hotel Bellevue
Right at the bottom of the Chavannes piste on the Front de Neige just next to the Office de Tourisme, the bar of the Hotel Bellevue is Les Gets' only slope-side apres venue. And boy has it had a facelift for this winter season! Expect to see a range of really different bands from guitar and saxophone duo Los Tos, to techno DJ Ralph and rock band Rubberneck. Yes, an eclectic mix but there’s always something going on at the Hotel Bellevue from 3.30pm onwards each and every afternoon. Keep an eye on their Facebook page for more details.

The Irish Pub
Celebrating its 20th birthday this winter, the Irish Pub is open every day from 2pm. It also has it’s own microbrewery, which understandably makes it a popular apres venue. Located on the main resort road, just a one-minute walk from the bottom of the Chavannes, the bar books occasional bands to play during après from 4pm. Follow them on Facebook for more details.

Le Barbylone
A new addition to the apres scene in Les Gets last winter, Baryblone might be one of the smallest bars in Les Gets, but it’s certainly one of the liveliest. You’ll find the bar on the main street in the resort centre, next to the Irish Pub, which is handy if you’re planning a bar crawl. Their DJ Papa Style battles against reggae and Ska MC Price Keman while they also play French and international football matches too. You’ll find more details on Facebook.

Bon apres!
