Whilst it's highly unlikely that you’re having a dry January if you’re on holiday in a ski resort, there are other things to do in the Portes du Soleil after the lifts close for the day. We decided that it'd be a good idea to take a look at some of Morzine and Les Gets’ après activities that don’t involve a load of Mutzig and Jagerbombing and the results are below.....
When I moved to Morzine three years ago the only decent band on the apres scene were a 70’s funk and soul cover group called Funkadelique. They’d pack out every venue they played and although elements of the band would change now and then, you could always rely on Funkadelique for a good night out. Things are very different in Morzine these days!
In principle I’m not a fan of resort bars whacking a massive entry fee on their New Year’s Eve offering. Some of the bars in Morzine that are usually free to enter (and very much fun once you’re in there), price their New Years entertainment at around €20 per person, and include ONE free drink. But why? Yes, it’s a busy night but there are no more punters in town than on many other nights of the year. And who wants to stay in just one bar anyway? So, determined not to spend a single euro on entry fees, here’s how my NYE went down in Morzine…
With the pistes packed out this week owing to the February half term holidays, the balance between hours on the hill and hours in the bar has shifted somewhat. You’re more likely to find me stretched out on the sunny terrace of Bar La Barque in Montriond than huffing and puffing my way through a lift queue.
As much as we don't want to face up to the fact that the end of the season is just round the corner, I'm afraid we're going to have to! However, let's not be sad about it....
At the start of the winter season Oli Branford started Morzine Social. Based on the tried and tested ‘pub crawl’ format, punters, seasonaires and locals were encouraged to get on board the Mutzig train. Yet it’s only now, with less than half the season to go, that I’ve actually turned out to a Morzine Social event. Shocking.....
Another winter is now done and dusted in everyone’s favourite ski resort (I would say that) and spring has arrived with a bang. This weekend we celebrated the closing of Morzine and Les Gets in +22 degrees temperatures and there were goggle tans a plenty at the end of the weekend.
Despite a slow start to the snow this winter in Avoriaz it looks like Santa got our note. The forecast is for nearly a foot of fresh snow on the higher ground over Christmas and Boxing Day, Merry Christmas indeed.
Well, that’s probably not true, but having had a huge tribe of mates staying in our chalet last week, après was obligatory. Every single day. And that got me thinking… there’s a brilliantly varied après scene in Morzine. Of course, that’s not news to me, and it’s probably not news to you either, but it does present us with a conundrum. With so much going on every single night, how the heck do you choose where to go? So here’s my seven night après planner!

So it’s official, the season is over. And thanks to Chez Flo and neighbouring bars in Avoriaz, it was sent off in style.

I may have been a loyal and useful après ski reporter thus far, but things have changed considerably in the last week. Well, since my last mammoth tried and tested après blog to be precise.
When it comes to the apres scene, it’s not all about Morzine. Les Gets has a much better apres scene than in previous winters, with a load of cool bars booking great bands and planning fun events for both holidaymakers and season workers. Transition festival got off to a flying start in Avoriaz on Sunday night with an incredible set from Dizzee Rascal. It’s the first time the festival has been in the resort and it certainly seems it’s got a decent future ahead of it.
Another week of après, skiing and a LOTS of snow! The resort has come alive with many of the Christmas guests arriving over the weekend and it hasn’t stopped snowing since. Morzine and Les Gets are now up and running with most lifts now operating and mountain side restaurants getting busier by the day. It looks set to be a great Christmas here in Morzine.
The start of February sees the start of the school holidays in French ski resorts. We’re bracing ourselves for a huge influx of families over the next month which affects après activities in two ways. Firstly, it’s easier to get served at the bar. Second, it’s harder to get anywhere.
Love is in the air on the streets and pistes of Morzine. It may well be half term but there’s plenty going on for couples in the resort this week. Here’s my favourite love bolt holes…
