Christmas in Avoriaz Review

Our top five for a Merry Christmas & Happy New Year in Avoriaz

featured in Activity Reviews Author James Fisher, Avoriaz Video Reporter Updated

Despite a slow start to the snow this winter in Avoriaz it looks like Santa got our note. The forecast is for nearly a foot of fresh snow on the higher ground over Christmas and Boxing Day, Merry Christmas indeed.

A white Christmas is guaranteed but there are so many Christmas events and activities laid on by the resort that we thought we'd help you navigate through them and pick out some of our favourites in Morzine and Avoriaz.

Torchlit Descents:
Before Santa arrives you can enjoy a torchlit descent, a glass of mulled wine and some fire works courtesy of the ESF in Morzine. From 6pm tonight the ski instructors will snake down the Pleney to the centre of town with flaming torches and fireworks. It's a family favourite and with free vin chaud it is a very happy way to kick off the Christmas celebrations.

If you are staying in Avoriaz then you can enjoy the torchlit descent on Tuesday 31st. The ESF in Avoriaz will be lighting up the pistes on New Years Eve and children can join in too.

Meet Santa:
Santa will be making an appearance in Avoriaz on Christmas Eve & Christmas Day. Taking a quick break before he starts delivering toys Santa will be in the centre of Avoriaz on the 24th from 7pm followed by fireworks and he'll be saying farewell to Avoriaz on Christmas Day at 17:00.

Christmas Day Skiing:
The best way to enjoy a white Christmas is up on the mountain. With so many pistes to enjoy in the Portes du Soleil picking where to ski can be tricky but over Christmas and Boxing Day we think sticking to the trees in Linderets would be the best bet. The Christmas snow will fall as rain at first on the lower ground so head up the new Prodains bubble and enjoy the fresh snow in the trees. You can stop for a Christmas hot Chocolate in the Lindertes bowl and the trees should mean you can see in the snow.

Ice Skating:
There are outdoor rinks in both Morzine and Avoriaz and after a day on the hill skating is a perfect family activity. Come Friday evening the snow should have stopped and you can go for a skate in the evening air and enjoy the surroundings which will look beautiful.
If you are a little too tired after a day on the hill but like the idea of skating then you can visit the ice rink in Morzine on either December 25th for the Ice Dance Show which begins at 18:30 or on the 27th for the Ice Hockey match against Strasbourg from 8:30.

Have a Night Out
Not everyone came on holiday this week with children and if you are looking for a night out then you will not be disappointed by your party options in Morzine and Avoriaz.
The Cavern Bar in Morzine are having an all-nighter on Christmas Eve with free shots for anyone in fancy dress. You'll find live music in Cafe Chaud on Christmas Day from 11 til late with DJ Eveson on the decks mixing a set of Deep House and Future Disco. There's also live music from El Grito del Serpiente (The Roar of the Snake) in the Dixie Bar on the 27th, and Lady and the Tramps in Cavern on the 27th.

You'll find more details about these and other events and parties in Avoriaz in our SeeAvoriaz.com Events Calendar.

Whatever you do in Avoriaz this Christmas all of us at SeeAvoriaz.com wish you a Merry Christmas and all the best for 2014.
