History & Culture in Les Gets
Les Gets is a traditional mountain village in the French Alps with a past shaped by forestry, farming and cheese making. Its name comes from old Savoyard words for the channels once used to slide timber down from the forests and for centuries life here revolved around the land. Things changed in 1936 when the first ski lift, the Boule de Gomme, opened and skiing slowly took over from logging. Les Gets enjoys an active winter and summer season. The lifts are open for skiers from the middle of December until the middle of April and for walkers and mountain bikers from June until September.
