Here we are back for another season and already buzzing for our first turns on all this fabulous snow. Avoriaz is pre-opening this weekend and probably next weekend too and with all the snow that’s fallen it’s shaping up to be a brilliant start. The official resort opening is 12 December through to 19 April.
The resort has seen 56 cm of fresh snow on the 25 November with another 12 cm expected on Sunday, the depth now being around 130cm up top at least! Temperatures are staying very cold, dropping to around -6°C overnight on Sunday, which should help the snow settle nicely and give a solid base for the early season. With pistes already blanketed and higher slopes looking thick, it’s looking like a great weekend for first turns and early-season powder.
The first big dumps of the season have generally passed across the Alps, delivering 30 to over 120 cm in places, with the Western Alps, including Avoriaz, coming out particularly well. A northerly flow is keeping conditions cold and fresh snow lying well on the upper slopes. Over the next few days the weather should remain mostly dry with occasional cloud cover, so the snow already down should stay in excellent condition, ideal for early riders eager to get on the mountain.
What’s new in Avoriaz this winter
While snow is the main story, Avoriaz has a few new highlights this winter. The legendary Arare Snowpark has been transformed into Nami Park, with fluid, surf-inspired lines, rails, boxes and a compact half-pipe, all decked out with a fresh Japanese-themed look for advanced freestyle riders. The resort has also introduced safety drones, including one with a thermal camera, to improve operational safety and locate anyone in need. All grooming is now done using 100% renewable fuel, reducing emissions significantly and making the resort more sustainable without compromising piste quality.
