Avoriaz moves into mid March with the high plateau above the resort still looking firmly wintry. Sitting at 1800 metres the village continues to benefit from its altitude and the surrounding slopes across the Portes du Soleil remain well covered. The dramatic cliffs around the resort and the wide open terrain towards Switzerland still hold a deep base, while longer sunny days are beginning to bring a touch of spring to the atmosphere.
Snow and Weather Summary
Current snow depths are around 110 to 130 cm at resort level around 1800 metres, with between 190 and 240 cm reported on the upper slopes above 2200 metres, particularly across the Chavanette and Hauts Forts sectors. A light snowfall of around 5 cm has refreshed the upper mountain in recent days which has helped maintain good surface conditions across exposed pistes.
Temperatures have ranged from minus 9 to minus 4 degrees on the higher slopes and between minus 1 and plus 6 degrees in the resort depending on sunshine. The freezing level has generally moved between 1900 and 2300 metres during the day but drops overnight which allows the pistes to reset and groom well. Winds have remained mostly light with occasional moderate gusts across the highest ridgelines.
On piste, the best skiing continues to be found above 2000 metres where the snow remains firm through the morning and early afternoon. The open slopes across the Avoriaz plateau and the higher terrain towards Switzerland are holding particularly well and offer reliable conditions for most of the day. Lower runs towards Morzine ski best earlier in the day before softening slightly during sunnier periods.
