As predicted the weather took a change today, hopefully in readiness for snow this evening! The forecast is for 10-25cm overnight with a rain snow limit around 1000m – resort height. Tomorrow it will continue to snow (light to moderate) giving an estimated 10-20cm. Onwards into Saturday there is another 10-25cm due with the rain snow limit fluctuating from 800-1200m. Epic powder days could be just around the corner. Fingers crossed the forecaster was having a good day.
Today was overcast with a damp feeling in the air after all those cold, crisp days. It felt a little warmer than the last few days making the snow a little heavier and clumpy in places, particularly low down. Not bad snow for sure and any iciness had disappeared with the milder temperatures. The snow was fast running, not at all spring sticky so very nice to ski in and for learners it’s great because there is less risk of catching edges.
We had a little ski around the Nyon today. Not too many runs though; we don’t want to burn out before all that powder arrives. We warmed up on the Aigle Rouge first time around. Second time we cut the switchbacks to take in the lumps and bumps to make the ski a little more demanding.
But we didn’t do much before heading for coffee and chat. We opted for a brew in the little restaurant to skiers’ right at the bottom of the Combe red. Not too bad at all but I did notice they have put the burger and chips up to 8 euros from 5 last year. It must have been (and probably still is) the cheapest meal on the mountain, more than edible also which is a bonus. Worth bearing in mind with half term coming up and little people to feed.
Heading for home shortly after our drink stop, we decided to get one last proper run in down the face of Pleney as opposed to following the Route des Nantes all the way to the bottom of the hill. To get to the Stade du Slalom we took the Fys chair up to the Pleney plateau. It drops you off right by the Vaffeur restaurant which I can highly recommend if you are the type of skier who likes a quality dining experience during your ski day. It’s a superb little place and hence it’s wise to book. I can particularly vouch for the chocolate gateau – superb! The owner’s mother hand makes these every morning.
The big question for Saturday is whether to enter the Les Gets Big Mountain Battle? Normally I’d be right up for any kind of competition (sounds like ski orienteering to me) but with all that powder due it could be tricky, I don’t want to be missing any powder skiing. We’ve covered the big mountain battle elsewhere so if you fancy that get yourself along. It should be fun and, in all likelihood, I’ll be giving it a go. It would be rude not to when people have gone to the effort of putting an event on.
