Interets Chairlift in Avoriaz Breaks Down Stranding 200 Skiers for Three Hours
It was a weekend of mixed fortunes in Avoriaz. On Sunday the sun came out and the powder was deep but on Saturday there was a blizzard and skiers were trapped on a chairlift that broke down for three hours.
The Interets chair from the base of Avoriaz to the top of the Haut Forts stopped working for three hours on Saturday due to a power failure and the emergency services were called in to evacuate the lift using ropes and absailing equipment. 200 people were recovered from the lift , which was repaired and working again on Sunday. Although a few people suffered mild hypothermia no one required hospitalisation.
