Spring conditions raise the Avalanche risk in Avoriaz

Take extra care if heading off piste

Authorities across the region are asking people to be extra vigilant when out on the slopes and to take expert advice if venturing off-piste.

The increased risk is being put down to spring time conditions in the mountains coupled with strong winds. Warmer temperatures mean snow won't freeze and will be loose and heavy especially on steep terrain and in places where there are usually grassy banks and rocks.

It's advised that if you are heading off-piste or into less well-tracked areas that you take the correct equipment with you including shovels, probes and transceivers. You're also urged to get expert guidance and advice from people who know the area.
