Geneva Airport Set to Expand to Meet Growth in Passenger Numbers

15 million passengers exceeded for the first time in the airports history

Geneva airport has grown considerably since it was built in 1968. Originally meant to handle 5 million passengers, the airport is now dealing with more than 3 times that number.

The challenge faced by the airport is how to continue growing with physical restrictions on site making it difficult. They don't have room to build a whole new terminal, so the plans are to build a new East wing to accommodate long haul flights.

Over 100 million CHF has already been spent on upgrading security systems and automatic passenger gates, and now the new wing is being added to the development plans. Flights over the North Atlantic, to Asia and Singapore are expected to operate once the building work is finished.

The plans are to have the new wing ready in a 3-4 year time period with as little disruption to normal service as possible.
