Avoriaz remains one of the most consistently wintry looking resorts in the Portes du Soleil as we move into March. The car free village is still surrounded by snow and the higher cliffs and bowls above resort are holding a deep base. There is a settled feel to the mountain now, with a mature snowpack in place and conditions that are reliable from first lift onwards.
Snow and Weather Summary
Current snow depths are around 110 to 130 cm at resort level at 1800 metres, with between 180 and 240 cm reported on the upper slopes above 2200 metres, particularly towards Hauts Forts at 2466 metres. A recent light snowfall of around 5 to 15 cm has freshened higher terrain, improving surface quality on exposed runs while the underlying base remains strong and well consolidated.
Temperatures have stayed relatively cool for early March, ranging from minus 9 to minus 4 degrees on upper slopes and between minus 3 and plus 2 degrees in the resort depending on sunshine. The freezing level has generally remained between 1400 and 1800 metres, dropping overnight and allowing for good refreezing on groomed pistes. Winds have been mostly light, with occasional moderate gusts on ridgelines but without significant impact on lift operations.
On piste, conditions are very good across most elevations thanks to the resort’s high base altitude. Snow remains firm and grippy through the morning and holds its quality well into the afternoon, especially on north facing slopes. The higher sectors towards Hauts Forts and the links towards Switzerland are skiing particularly well, with strong coverage and consistent surfaces. Lower connections towards Morzine are open but are best enjoyed earlier in the day during milder spells.
