The towns and villages of Avoriaz
Avoriaz is purpose-built ski resort at an altitude of 1800 metres, sitting on a plateau overlooking Morzine in the valley below. It's a great place to stay if you want easy access to the rest of the Portes du Soleil ski area, as it sits right in the middle. Morzine below, is a bigger, traditional French mountain town, with its historical buildings and the weekly market.
Les Gets is often spoken about in the same breath as Morzine, this is because they both access the same ski area, however Les Gets has it's own comprehensive lift system and two separate ski areas. Les Gets is around 100m higher than Morzine and often snowier! Les Gets is smaller than Morzine and consists of pretty chalets amongst wooded mountainsides.
Montriond lies on the other side of the river from Morzine and is a small village with fewer facilities. A ski bus connects you to ski lifts in Morzine and Ardent. The village of Les Lindarets is accessible by lift during the winter and summer seasons and lies at the top of the Ardents lift. Other villages close by include Chatel, a traditional French ski resort that also has great access into both French and Swiss sides of the Portes du Soleil ski area, and St Jean d'Aups, a small village with its own separate ski area. See how it's all connected with this map.
