Small slab avalanche carried a skier several metres

A skier was caught in a small slide yesterday in a couloir which started from a closed piste in the Chatel ski area.

The person was only carried a few metres and was not buried, only sustaining small injuries to their face. A ski instructor on a nearby chair lift alerted piste security to come to the rescue.

Head of Chatel's piste security Jean Brunet told France 3 that they were lucky that the slide occurred where it did and that the snow wasn't any deeper.

Strong winds in the last few days have created an even more unstable snow pack, and anyone venturing off piste should exercise caution. Take a look at the daily avalanche bulletin for updates and if in doubt go with a guide.
