Avoriaz Event Review: 9th November 2012

Warming up for the winter ski season in London

Imprint
By Jack Franks, Updated

The Relentless Freeze Festival did exactly what it said on the tin and those not wearing their ski jackets could be found with teeth chattering, huddled around the vin chaud stand wrapping themselves in a fruity alcoholic blanket.

Set against the iconic industrial backdrop of Battersea Power Station, ski and snowboard enthusiasts came in their thousands to watch pros on the big kicker, enjoy the mix of heavyweight bands, DJs and resort favourites, catch up with old friends and enjoy pretty much everything they have come to expect from a good resort apart from actually getting up on the mountain.

There was a strange atmosphere in the air at Freeze, one of expectation and excitement, and I don’t think it had anything to do with the events of the day; even if watching a 53-year-old Flava Flav dragging a giant clock around the stage with his old crew, Public Enemy, is your idea of top drawer entertainment.

No, the real excitement was all about what is yet to come - the Winter 2012/13 season. You could feel the anticipation.
Some had gone as far as wearing full ski gear, goggles included, and I even spotted a few retro onesies knocking around. In every corner of the power station grounds people discussed excitedly how they would be involved in this year’s ski season.
Some talked of driving out for a long weekend between work, others were looking forward to their hard earned chalet holiday and thousands of seasonnaires excitedly talked about their chosen resorts – the whole place was buzzing!

There is something quite special about going somewhere for a day where every single person has one thing in common and as cold and wet as it was at Freeze this year – it was the best warm up for the season people could have asked for.

There is plenty going on in Avoriaz throughout the year. The resort plays host to a number of winter music festivals which take place across the resort and pistes, namely Rock the Pistes and Snowboxx in March. In summer, the Pass'portes du Soleil mountain bike festival is the biggest event for bikers, with the occasional Tour de France stage passing nearby.
