1. Le Lac de Chavanette

This gentle walk is very sun exposed so before setting off make sure you have plenty of water and suncream for the duration

2. Le Lac de Nyon Guerin

Location: Morzine

Situated on Pointe de Nyon this walk offers fantastic views without a great deal of effort

It is possible to drive to the start of this short walk via the Joux Plane, otherwise you can access the start via the Telepherique de Nyon. The walk is a return so you can follow the same route back to the starting point. It is also possible to take in some spectacular 360° views from the top of Pointe de Nyon via the Telesiege de la Pointe. The Nyon Guerin lake is an artificial lake created to supply the snow cannons in the Morzine ski area.

3. Les Dereches Park

Location: Morzine

With three different circuit options possible, you can choose from a short 40min walk to a 1h20 walk. Located near the Parc des Dereches, you can combine this walk with the wide range of activities that are possible at the sports centre. Swimming, tennis, indoor climbing and horse riding are just some of the sports that you can try your hand at while in Morzine.

4. La Mine de la Lappiaz

Location: Avoriaz

The historical discovery of slate in Morzine dates as far back as 1732. Found in all the cliffs overhanging the Valley de Sous le Saix (Slate Valley). In the Lappiaz mine, the slate was quarried and made use of between 1856 and 1963.

5. Le Sentier du Renard

Location: Morzine

This gentle walk is great for families with a waterfall to look at and a gentle terrain to walk on. Starting from the centre of Morzine you can follow the route all the way to Ergine

6. Le Sentier de l'Ecureuil

Location: Morzine

This gentle walk is great with children and families, the route will take you through the old town of Morzine and offers beautiful views of the Morzine village

7. L'Alpage de Morzinette par les Grandes Sutes

Location: Avoriaz

This circuit can start from Morzine or Avoriaz. Using the cable car with the Multi Pass enjoy a downhill walk from Avoriaz to Morzine.

Starting in Avoriaz, follow the track which rises gently next to the cliff face and follow the round yellow ground markers leading to Combe du Machon (1,775m). Continue to La Choux (1,710m) and Plan du Vieux Chalet (1,710m). You might see, and you'll definitely hear, whistling Marmots! Another 20 minutes downhill and you'll arrive at the Morzinette Chalets.

Morzinette (1,600m) is a summer mountain pasture with traditional chalets and pretty views over the Ardoisieres valley. Return by retracing your footsteps and then follow signs to Pied de la Suette. This footpath goes quite steeply downhill through the forest, to Covagnes via the Plan des Rochers (forest path). At Covagnes catch the cable car back to Avoriaz.

8. Montriond village to the lake

Location: Morzine

A beautiful and leisurely walk starting from Montriond town centre at the car park between the church and the town hall, with the church's original bell tower being a spectacular monument itself, take a pause and look at the distinctive structure

9. Hamlets and villages tour, St Jean d'Aulps

Location: Saint Jean d'Aulps

Set off and explore the valley's old hamlets and picturesque villages on this walk, taking in all of the nature and culture along the way. Immerse yourself in the simple alpine lifestyle as you stroll around the valley.

Whether you're after a gentle stroll or a challenging mountain adventure, Avoriaz is a brilliant place to explore on foot. In both summer and winter, walking and hiking are a great way to take in the Alpine scenery, with everything from forest trails to high ridgelines and views stretching all the way to Mont Blanc. With well-marked routes, lift access and options for all levels, it’s one of the best ways to enjoy the mountains at your own pace.

Avoriaz and the wider Portes du Soleil area offer fantastic opportunities for walking and hiking, with over 800 kilometres of marked summer trails winding through forests, mountain ridges, alpine farms and lakes. Whether you're following a short local path to the Lac de Montriond or tackling a longer route that crosses into Switzerland, there's something for every level of walker. Lift passes are available in summer, making it easier to reach high-altitude routes and enjoy the views without a long climb.

Family friendly walking in Avoriaz

Families will find gentle trails suitable for children, while more experienced hikers can explore longer, more demanding paths through remote terrain. It’s a good idea to stop by the tourist office for up-to-date trail information, maps and weather forecasts. If you're heading higher or planning a full-day hike, it’s worth speaking to one of the local mountain guides who can offer advice or even take you out on a guided walk.

Trail running in Avoriaz

Trail running is also hugely popular in the area, with over 400 kilometres of marked routes in the Portes du Soleil alone. Routes are graded from easy to expert, and include scenic ridgeline skyruns, vertical kilometre climbs and enduro trails. In nearby Morzine, there are discovery routes in the Vallée de la Manche, shorter loops in the Vallée des Ardoisières and routes linked to the Trail des Hauts Forts. Many can be accessed via the summer lift system.

Winter walking

In winter, Avoriaz is just as welcoming for walkers. A network of groomed paths means you can still enjoy the landscape on foot, with or without snowshoes. Warm layers, waterproofs and sturdy boots are all you need, though walking poles and boot grippers are helpful for icy sections. As always in the mountains, check the weather forecast before heading out.
