They say that time flies when you’re having fun, and boy this season has flown. Christmas and New Year is a distant memory, and European school holiday madness has been kindly shoved to the back of resort workers’ minds.

The Avoriaz ski area has been exceptionally well maintained this year, and the snow has been looked after really well by the piste teams. Most that live here will tell you that spring is their favourite time of the year, and here’s why.

The conditions this winter have been rather varied. We got off to a good start, however over Christmas and New Year the slopes were covered in virtually bullet-proof ice. January delivered us with fantastic snowfall, and February saw blissful conditions and bluebird days. We thought that spring had arrived too soon, however we find ourselves in March with temperatures dropping and snow falling again, just what we needed to top us up for the end of the winter.

Avoriaz Snow Report & Forecast

By the beginning of April, a lot of people are already setting their sights on summer, sun, and beach holidays. Don’t be fooled though; Avoriaz may be a winter resort in these months, but often by the end of the season locals will be digging out their swimmers and heading up the beautiful Lac Montriond for lazy afternoon picnics and end of season socials. As the lifts and slopes will be a lot quieter up the mountain (with the exception of Easter week), you’ll be able to get some quick laps in, working up a thirst in time for a lunchtime pit-stop at one of the many restaurants in resort.

In the Lindarets bowl you are spoilt for choice in terms of which inviting deck chair to park yourselves in for an hour, whilst sipping on a refreshing demi-pêche. Most of the restaurants in the centre of town have sun soaked outdoor seating as well as mouth-watering menus, however new this year you can enjoy your very own BBQ on the mountain. At the top of the Chappelle Park, you can now use a free BBQ; all you have to do is bring your own food. On a sunny day there is no greater place to be than at the top of the park with a couple of beers and good grub, plus it’s far cheaper than your average mountain meal.

Cost & time effective

Perhaps you’ve got this far into your working year having left enough holiday days for a getaway, or maybe you’d like to take the little ones away for part of the Easter school holidays, which this year are from April 6th to 21st. If you’re travelling from the UK, Avoriaz is an extremely time and cost effective destination. Flights from the UK will get you to Geneva in less than two hours, as will your transfer to the resort. For airport transfers, check out Getaway Vans, Alpy Bus, or EasyJet’s own EasyBus. Currently you can get return flights from Gatwick to Geneva at the end of March for less the £50 per person, meaning that a return journey from London to Avoriaz could cost as little as £120 including transfers. Due to Easter falling later in the calendar this year, flights in April are slightly more expensive, so bare that in mind if you’re travelling on a budget. If you like music, March is the best time for you to visit, as there are three music festivals about to take over the resort from now until the end of the month. Check out this article to see what’s on throughout March.

Parties & events

Avoriaz’s closing weekend is well worth a visit if you like to party. Although March is the month of music here, there’s nothing quite like the atmosphere that the seasonnaires and locals bring for this weekend, April 20th and 21st. Knowing that the resort will be closed to skiiers and boarders for another year, everyone gets their last laps in before heading to the best parties. Chez Flo, Les Trappeurs, The Igloo Village and La Folie Douche will each be holding special events for the occasion. Timings have not been announced yet so follow them on social media or online to keep updated. It says a lot that I’ve been grinning from ear-to-ear whilst typing this up. For me, spring really is the best time of year out here. Hope to see you in Avoriaz soon.
